Ramage
Farms was established in October
of 1955 when Jewel
and Elizabeth Ramage moved to Hooks from the
drought stricken Central Texas town of Hico. Producing oats, soybeans,
and coastal hay, the farm thrived in the Red River bottoms. In
1960, Jewel reconditioned an old pecan orchard on the farm and began
selling pecans to local friends and neighbors. In 1978, Brent Ramage,
a recent graduate of Texas A & M University, chose to return
to the family farm and put his degree in agronomy to work. During
the early 1980’s, Brent built a country store out of an old
mule barn, offering pecans from that same orchard on the farm, as
well as homemade preserves and pecan brittle. Eventually, that seasonal
holiday gift business has turned into a year round business, with
more than fifty products available. With the success of the on-farm
business, the store was relocated to its current residence at 901
Main Street off Interstate 30. Here, one can find various flavors
of jams and jellies, specialty coffees and teas, and delicious candies
and fudge. Many of the delectable treats are made right here on
the farm or locally. What is represented in the food product line
is some of the best that Texas has to offer.
